FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WHAT DOES subless DO?

subless lets you use a single pool of funding to access many different publications and content creators. The free tier puts your computer to work for you and uses the profits of that work as the pool of funds. The paid tier lets you deposit funds to use as that pool.

HOW DOES subless DISTRIBUTE FUNDS?

As you browse, when you get to a subless-funded page, that content creator is transparently added to a list of creators whose content you've consumed. At the end of the month, the funds from your pool are distributed among the creators from that list.

WHY NOT JUST SUBSCRIBE?

Let's be real, most people only have one subscription for news. That subscription doesn't pay for everything you consume, and doesn't get you access for everything you want to consume. subless let's you choose what you consume from as many sources as you want.

WHY NOT USE AN AGGREGATOR?

Aggregators get between readers and publishers. That means readers can't really choose their sources, and publishers don't get to know their readers. That's why most aggregators have limited sources, and usually limited content from each of those sources.

ADS HAVE ALWAYS FUNDED THE INTERNET, WHY STOP NOW?

Ad revenue fell 42% in 2020, that's part of why 76% of news publishers had paywalls enabled. Ads aren't going to fund the news, but subless could.

AS A CREATOR , WHY SHOULD I USE subless FOR FUNDING?

Ads can repel users, are insecure, and violate privacy - not to mention 47% of users block them outright. Paywalls also repel users, and subscriptions are a big step for consumers to take - they require a close relationship with the consumer and are a zero-sum game in which you fight to be one of the finite number of subscriptions a consumer will undertake. We want to shift funding to be directly between you and your users like subscriptions, so you don't have to worry about ad agencies in the middle, but without requiring a user-repelling paywall.
